A 55% practice score right now is not the story it feels like.
People in bar prep communities post their practice MBE percentages like they are reading tea leaves. "I'm at 58%, am I cooked?" "Hit 63% on a Barbri set today, does that mean I'm okay?" The anxiety around these numbers is real, and most of it is based on a misunderstanding of what practice scores actually measure.
Here is what you need to know about MBE practice percentages.
Practice questions are consistently harder than the real exam. This is well-documented. Commercial course questions and third-party adaptive question banks are designed to expose your weaknesses. Real NCBE questions on the actual exam are different in structure and difficulty calibration. Candidates who score 55 to 62% on commercial practice consistently pass with MBE scaled scores in the 130s.
The number that matters is your trend, not your snapshot. A candidate moving from 52% to 60% over three weeks is in a fundamentally better position than a candidate sitting at 65% with a flat trend. What direction are you moving?
Subject breakdown matters more than overall percentage. A 60% overall score that hides a 40% in Contracts and a 78% in Torts is a very different problem from a 60% that is relatively even across subjects. Pull your subject breakdown today and look at your two lowest subjects. Those are your next two weeks of focused work.
What to do with this information right now.
If you are below 55% on practice: prioritize answer explanation review over question volume. After each question set, spend equal time reading the explanations for questions you got wrong. The explanations are where the learning happens.
If you are between 55% and 65%: you are in the range where focused subject work moves the score. Identify your two weakest subjects and do 40 targeted questions in each per week.
If you are above 65%: focus on consistency. Timed full blocks, proper pacing, and MEE prep deserve your attention now.
Your practice score is a compass, not a verdict.
